Research Publications

Paul Okunieff, MD

The University of Florida Department of Radiation Oncology has led research efforts in the field for 60 years. In fact, our residents are some of the most published residents of any radiation oncology residency program in the United States. Peruse our most recent publications and research highlights below:

Current Research Highlights

  • Long-term outcomes following proton therapy for non-metastatic central nervous system germinoma in children and adolescents (Brisson et al), which presents the largest single institution experience utilizing proton therapy for the management of central nervous system pure germinoma in children and adolescents (growths of cells that form from reproductive cells).
  • International Recommendations on Postoperative Management for Potentially Resectable Locally Recurrent Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (Mendenhall et al), which provides international recommendations on postoperative management for potentially resectable locally recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma, with a special focus on postoperative re-irradiation.
  • Investigating surface proteins and antibody combinations for detecting circulating tumor cells of various sarcomas (Siemann et al), which emphasizes the importance of studying cell surface proteins and subtype stratification for cancers as heterogeneous as sarcomas.
  • Assessing safety and efficacy of a novel glucose-free amino acid oral rehydration solution for watery diarrhea management in children: a randomized, controlled, phase III trial (Vidyasagar et al), which indicates a promising avenue for improving pediatric diarrhea management worldwide.
  • Survival (Time-To-Event) Curve Names and Endpoints (Cassidy et al), a resident-led research project that explains widely used names and event endpoints for survival analyses in a way that will help radiation oncologists consistently present and interpret experimental findings that influence clinical practice decisions.
  • A summer course in cancer for high school students-an update on lessons taught and lessons learned (Siemann et al), which discusses the results of a cancer-focused, cooperative UF Health Cancer Center/UFSSTP summer learning program for high school students.
  • A review on 4D cone-beam CT (4D-CBCT) in radiation therapy: Technical advances and clinical applications (Zhang et al), which comprehensively reviews the technical developments surrounding 4D-CBCT in order to provide a better understanding its capabilities and potential to enhance radiation therapy.
