The 53rd annual UF Radiation Oncology Research SeminarA successful 53rd Annual Radiation Oncology Research Seminar took place February 24, 2023 at the Best Western Gateway Grand, Gainesville.

The 2023 Keynote Speaker was Nancy Lee, MD, FASTRO, Vice Chair, Department of Radiation Oncology; Service Chief, Head & Neck Radiation Oncology; and Service Chief, Proton Therapy, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York City. A radiation oncologist with more than 17 years of experience, Dr. Lee specializes in using advanced forms of radiation to treat head and neck cancer, including thyroid cancer. These include proton therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy, image-guided radiation therapy, and stereotactic body radiation therapy.

Dr. Lee offered two well-received, in-depth discussions on the subjects of “Rethinking Radiation Oncology: Biology-Driven Precision Radiation” and “Nasopharyngeal Cancer: Past, Present, Future.” Presentations during the morning session included:

  • Advances in the Use of DNA for Biosecurity and Cancer Treatment Response
  • Unveiling Inequities in Palliative and Supportive Care for Patients with Metastatic Breast Cancer in the State of Florida
  • Local Salvage of Radiorecurrent Prostate Cancer
  • Outcomes for Patients Treated with Post-mastectomy Breast Reconstruction and PT
  • Long-term Outcomes following Fractionated PT for Benign or Intracranial Meningioma
  • Installation and First Cases with MR Linac Adaptive Radiotherapy at UF Health
  • Radiotherapy for Carcinoma with Clinical Perineural Invasion

After lunch and an awards presentation, the afternoon session featured:

Our annual Research Seminar is an important venue that allows participants to define optimal treatment approaches, produce the best plans, employ first-rate techniques, provide healing experiences for our patients, assess outcomes, and develop new treatment approaches, providing invaluable information to faculty and residents from several educational institutions as well as professionals in private practice.
