The University of Florida Department of Radiation Oncology uses the Pinnacle 3-dimensional (3D) treatment planning system (Philips Medical Systems), and Monaco treatment planning system (Elekta Inc) for most external beam treatment planning and accurate dose calculation. Our medical dosimetrists, in consultation with our radiation oncologists and medical physicists, design treatment plans that are tailored to each patient.
The majority of the treatment plans are done using an inverse planning approach, where computer optimization algorithms are used so that the best possible treatment plan is obtained based on the treatment goals specified by the physician for each patient. After the treatment plan is approved by the attending physician, it is sent to the delivery system via the MOSAIQ Record & Verify system. All treatment plans go through a rigorous double check/quality assurance procedure before used for patient treatment.
