The use of low dose radiation therapy is emerging as a highly promising treatment to inhibit restenosis. German clinicians first demonstrated the promise of intravascular irradiation in the early 1990s using gamma radiation to prevent restenosis in leg arteries.Radiation has been used therapeutically in medicine for about 100 years for the treatment of proliferative cell disorders such as cancer. Both high energy gamma irradiation and low energy beta irradiation have application to reducing the excessive proliferation of “scar” and other vascular wall cells and thus preventing restenosis.
