The UF Health Shands Hospital Department of Radiation Oncology has received the coveted American College of Radiology (ACR) Radiation Oncology Practice Accreditation, awarded April 7, 2023. This is the fourth consecutive ACR accreditation for the department.
ACR accreditation has been considered the gold standard in medical imaging since 1987. The rigorous, comprehensive accreditation process focuses on diagnostic image quality, staff qualifications, policies, protocols, equipment, and therapeutic treatment.
Facilities may be accredited in nine imaging modalities – breast ultrasound, Computed Tomography (CT), mammography, MRI, nuclear medicine, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), radiation oncology, stereotactic breast biopsy, and ultrasound – by meeting or surpassing industry-accepted quality standards for patient care. Accreditation is awarded for a period of three years.
“ACR accreditation endorses the excellence of all aspects of our advanced, sub-specialized tertiary care academic program,” said Robert A. Zlotecki, MD, PhD, UF Radiation Oncology Professor, Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs, and Medical Director. “It has also been integral to our ongoing relationship as a Veterans Community Care Program provider for cancer services under the VA MISSION Act.”
The ACR accreditation recognizes UF Radiation Oncology’s high level of image quality and safety, and the department’s excellence in the areas of equipment, medical personnel and quality assurance.
“While we have tremendous confidence in our team’s ability to deliver top-notch healthcare and save lives, receiving ACR accreditation means making it over a high bar in every aspect of our operation, and so it is a proud moment to receive their seal of approval,” said Assistant Professor Kathryn E. Hitchcock, MD, PhD.
